Finding the Right Highlight for Your Undertone
By: Gabriella Abreu
I bet after reading the title of this post you’re wondering, “why do I have to find my undertone for highlight?” Well, simply, you don’t. But, if you were wondering how to get the most natural looking highlighter, you’ve come to the right place!
It’s no secret that highlight should be lighter than your skin shade, but matching the undertone is very important in making it look natural. Thus, someone with warmer skin would use a gold/rose gold highlighter and someone with cooler skin would use a whiter/purple toned highlighter.

There are many shades of highlighters to choose from. My personal favorite to use is the Wet N Wild MegaGlo Highlighting Powder in the shade “Precious Petals”—which is only $4.99! This looks really nice with my skin tone, but it also look really good on Mariah who has a much warmer complexion than I do. (I’m the shade Light Beige in the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation to give you an idea of what my skin tone is).
For cooler toned skin, I recommend the Anastasia Beverly Hills Sugar Glow Kit! For ladies with warm and deeper skin tones, I recommend the Anastasia Beverly Hills Sun Dipped Glow Kit.
There are many ways to figure out your undertones. There are many charts online (frankly, none of them represent deep-dark skin girls enough so I will not attach a photo, oops). Nonetheless, the most accurate way to find your undertone is if you visit your local Sephora, Ulta, or MAC. Makeup Artists can identify your undertones and help you find matching products!
Below are the glow kits and their swatches on different skin colors!
